Guided tour with the local guide of Volterra. The town lies in a magnificent position on a precipitous hill with open views in every direction across a splendid yellow and grey landscape of rolling clay hills. It is an austere medieval walled town, the successor to an Etruscan city of much greater extent. Almost all the buildings are constructed out of panchina, a kind of limestone which is the matrix of alabaster, and which is found here in abundance.
