What is GlobalWorks?

GlobalWorks internships are personalized internship programs that bring you out of the country, and into the workplace. We connect academic study with real-world experiences by providing full-time international internship opportunities to UO students in various career fields. Working with local professional internship providers in locations around the world, we provide individualized placements for UO students. Students earn UO credits and life-changing work experience in a different culture. Immerse yourself in a new city, earn UO course credits, and gain professional experience with a GlobalWorks internship.

Please know that you only need to submit ONE GlobalWorks application, even if you are interested in potentially more than one location. In the item called “GlobalWorks Career Fields & Location Questionnaire” you are able to select which internship location would be your second and third choice.

How to apply: 

Apply to UO GlobalWorks International Internship programs by clicking the “Start an Application.” You can open an application to view all the materials you’ll need before you submit. Late applications may be accepted based on position availability but note that for some terms and locations the program can be very competitive. After review by the University, students will need to interview with our third-party provider for final acceptance. For more information, view the full GlobalWorks application steps here. Note that you only need to submit one application per term for GlobalWorks and can identify alternate locations within the application. This program is less than 90 days. 

 

If you hold a US passport, you do not need to apply for a visa to visit South Africa as you will be granted a 90-day visitors visa upon your arrival. If you are not a US Citizen: Notify your GlobalWorks Advisor. Students who are not US citizens should contact the consulate in their country of residence about visa requirements, no matter the duration of the program of study.

Academic Details

Students will enroll in the following courses.

  1. OGWI 188: Intercultural Communication (4 credits)
  2. OGWI 488: Internship (8 credits)

Course Equivalencies

UO students: please refer to the UO Course Equivalency Process and the UO Office of the Registrar Course Equivalency Database.

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Housing Description

Students will arrange own housing through pre-approved organization called Rent-A-Room. Clean, secure, and buzzing with a social vibe, Rent-A-Room ensures a vibrant community experience and is located in the colorful neighborhood of Observatory, close to shops, eateries, nightlife and transport. Each participant enjoys a fully furnished, private room while sharing common areas with fellow interns. Upon acceptance, we will connect you to Rent-a-Room to explore your housing options based on the dates of your program.

Cancellation Policy

Student agrees to $500 non-refundable deposit.
60 - 30 Days prior to program start

Student is responsible for 25% of the total program costs. 
29 - 15 days prior to program start

Student is responsible for 75% of the total program costs. 
14 Days or fewer before program start, or on or after program start

Student is responsible for 100% of the total program costs. 
Note that scholarship funds are not able to be applied to program deposit.

IMPORTANT: The GEO Cancellation Policy is effective from the time a student agrees to pay their non-refundable program deposit or electronically signs the program commitment form, regardless of application or acceptance status. It is essential to read this policy before a potential cancellation takes place, to fully understand the withdrawal and cancellation penalties, and to understand what it means financially to commit to a study abroad program.

Students who cancel their participation must notify GEO in writing. Email is acceptable (geoinfo@uoregon.edu). Verbal notification to GEO or notification given to a non-UO campus study abroad office is not sufficient.
