A city sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Jerusalem is a melding of past and present, of ancient roots and modern innovations. The goal of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem program is for you to gain insight into the cultural and religious diversity of Jerusalem and Israel, both current and historical, through quality academic programming. Academic year courses are taught in English (with the exception of language classes). Summer programs vary in theme.

Students are strongly recommended to contact with the GEO program advisor before completing an application.

Early application is advised. Selection for the program is based on a review of the student's written application, transcripts, recommendations, and a personal interview. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by Hebrew University.

IMPORTANT: Application for the Hebrew University program involves two parts. Both parts of the application are due by the GEO application deadline.

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the Hebrew University application process.

Academic Details

Take courses in English in the Rothberg International School at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for one semester or a full academic year. Your studies will include a summer or winter intensive course before the semester starts, called an Ulpan, which could include Hebrew, Arabic, or general studies about Jerusalem and is designed to increase your proficiency in a critical language, regardless of your initial level, or your knowledge of the area.

Each semester, you will enroll in a flexible program consisting of language instruction and a variety of courses taught in English in the following areas:

  • Middle East and Islamic Studies
  • Political Science and International Relations
  • Israel Studies: History, Politics, Society and Culture
  • Psychology and Cognitive Sciences
  • Conflict and Security Studies
  • Business and Law
  • Education

  • Hebrew Language

As a study abroad student, you can also choose from a growing list of regular courses offered in English from Hebrew University’s Science, Humanities, and Social Sciences faculties. Part-time internships are also available in a variety of fields.

Summer Programs

Open to undergraduate and graduate students, these programs are designed to highlight the rich history, fascinating present, and promising future of the Middle East while providing you with opportunities to live and breathe the subject matter. Various stimulating co-curricular and extracurricular activities, seminars, and trips complement the courses.

HUJ offers a wide variety of summer programs, focused on:

Non-UO students: Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information.

Additional Requirements

  • Semester programs: Junior standing is required for the Fall and Academic Year programs. Sophomores may participate in winter/spring of their sophomore year.
  • Summer programs: Some summer programs require sophomore standing and some require junior standing. Visit the program page for each summer program for more details.
  • Note: Some special programs, including dance, music, and art programs, have additional eligibility requirements. See the Hebrew University website for more information.

Housing Description

Students are mainly housed in the Student Village complex. They live in single bedrooms in air-conditioned suites. If rooms are unavailable in the Scopus Student Village, students will be housed in other university housing facilities. 

A staff of specially selected Israeli students (called madrichim), who reside in the dormitories, assist you in adjusting to campus life at the Hebrew University and help you obtain the full benefit of your stay in Israel. For more information, please visit the University Housing website.

The student housing complex on Mount Scopus, overlooking the incredible panorama of Jerusalem, is within walking distance of the University. It offers an independent setting appropriate for overseas students. By living in the complex, you will have the opportunity to share experiences with Israeli students.
