As I sit down to reflect on my study abroad journey, I can't help but feel a whirlwind of emotions. It's been an incredible adventure, filled with breathtaking sights, enriching experiences, and valuable lessons. Yet, it hasn't been without its challenges, particularly as an African American woman navigating a new culture and facing instances of discrimination.

From the bustling streets of Barcelona to the serene landscapes of Tuscany, my time abroad has been nothing short of amazing. I've had the opportunity to explore picturesque cities in Italy and other countries including Spain and Greece, I have immersed myself in diverse cultures, and created friendships with people from all corners of the globe. However, amidst the excitement and wonder, there have been moments that have tested my resilience and forced me to confront the harsh reality of being a black woman in a foreign country.

The hardest part of my journey has undoubtedly been encountering prejudice and discrimination. It was a stark reminder that bigotry knows no borders, and even in a foreign place, I couldn't escape the ugliness of racism. From being subjected to derogatory remarks to having water thrown at me, these experiences were deeply hurtful and shook me to the core. It was a painful realization that despite our differences, we are all bound by the shared struggle against injustice.

Despite the challenges, I've remained steadfast in my belief in the power of kindness and empathy. While some may judge me based on my appearance, I refuse to let their ignorance define my worth. Instead, I've chosen to surround myself with individuals who value diversity and embrace difference. Though I may be the only African American person in my program, I've found strength in my uniqueness and resilience in the face of adversity.

Through these experiences, I've learned invaluable lessons about self-worth and resilience. I've discovered the importance of standing up for myself and refusing to accept mistreatment (taking in regard my safety as the first priority). Moreover, I've gained a deeper appreciation for the beauty of diversity and the strength that comes from unity. My time abroad has also been a journey of cultural discovery and personal growth. While there have been moments of culture shock and discomfort, I've learned to embrace the differences that make each culture unique. Through each place I have visited, I've come to appreciate the richness of diversity and the beauty of cultural exchange.
