Program Overview

Iceland is a world leader in developing the use of renewable energy. While this is partly attributable to the country’s ample endowment of geothermal and hydroelectric resources, Icelanders have also made unique economic choices, valuing the social benefits of energy independence differently than much of the world.

The Renewable Energy, Technology, and Resource Economics program is divided into three components. In the capital, Reykjavik, you will meet with politicians, industry leaders, and social activists to develop your understanding of how Iceland’s energy policy fits into the larger national agenda. In Akureyri, you will study at the School for Renewable Energy Science, a new center associated with the University of Akureyri. There, Icelandic energy specialists, engineers, and geologists teach courses. You will also visit significant geological and energy sites in northern Iceland.

Coursework in the Icelandic language will help you develop a deeper appreciation of the culture.

SIT offers two different summer sessions. UO students may go on Session II; Summer Session I is not open to UO students, as it overlaps with the end of spring term.

If you are interested in applying to a SIT program, we strongly advise you to meet with an advisor prior to applying.

Selection for the program is based on a review of your written application, recommendation, transcript(s), and completion of the interview process. Qualified applicants are recommended by a GEO Study Abroad Program Advisor. The final selection of participants is made by SIT.

IMPORTANT: Application for a SIT program involves two parts:

  1. Completion of the GEO application process.
  2. Completion of the SIT application process.

Please note that the GEO deadline supersedes the SIT deadline.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $500 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).
