Program Overview

This 10-week Spanish language immersion program offers first year Spanish language students the ability to complete the final term of the 100 level Spanish series as well as the second year of Spanish. Students who have already completed the entire 100 level Spanish series can complete the entire second year of Spanish and earn additional Spanish elective credits on the program.

You will improve your Spanish language skills in this impressively historical and picturesque city, while still being only 25 minutes by high-speed train from Spain's capital, Madrid. In addition, you live in a homestay which further supports your immersion into Spanish society and culture. you will attend courses at the GEO Center with other American students from all over the US, yet also have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in local culture and explore friendships with Segovians. You can participate in tandem language learning activities with local university students or do an internship at a local business or organization. Excursions to neighboring sites of importance and other group activities are included in the program fee.

Discount for Pell Recipients

To expand access to study abroad, GEO is offering a $400 discount for this program to UO students who currently have the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid (FAFSA).

Academic Details

You will immerse yourself in the Spanish language at GEO's Segovia Center, and attend classes designed exclusively for GEO participants. Local GEO instructors, experts in their field, have extensive experience teaching U.S. students. All courses are taught entirely in Spanish. Classes are typically small, allowing you the opportunity to interact frequently with faculty members in and out of the classroom. The central location of Segovia facilitates excursions to neighboring sites of importance such as the royal palace in La Granja, the museums of Madrid, the Route of the famous Spanish castles, and more. Excursions are led by professors and are integrated into the courses, encouraging students to apply what they learn in the classroom to the sights around them.

This Spring quarter program offers two tracks. The first is designed for students who have previously completed the equivalent of SPAN 102 or SPAN 111 to finish SPAN 103/112 and also the entire second year of Spanish on the program. The second track is designed for students who have completed SPAN 103 or SPAN 112 and wish to complete the entire second year of Spanish plus additional 200 level credits on the program. Both tracks include a pre-set course load of 4 courses, offering 160 contact hours of Spanish instruction.

All courses offered in Segovia are recognized and approved for academic credit by various GEO partner institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Check with your study abroad advisor for more information, in particular how many contact hours are required for internship or service learning credit.

Housing Description

Housing in Segovia is designed to help you experience the local culture of Spain and to improve the speed of language acquisition while living with a host family. Daily interactions with the host family afford cultural nuances that could otherwise be overlooked. Homestays in Segovia are carefully selected to fit your needs and requests. Homestays are located within walking distance of the GEO center and classrooms or near local bus lines. You are rarely placed in a home with another student, but if that is the case, you both will always have your own private room with a shared bathroom. Linens, towels and light laundry are provided by your host. Immerse yourself into the daily life and routine of the household and experience Spanish cuisine and food culture as host families prepare all of your meals. Culturally, mealtimes in Spain are a very important time for family and are very pleasant occasions.
