The History of Music (B2, C1)

The History of Music course will introduce students to the history of French music from the Baroque period to the present day. In the fall, you will study French vocal and instrumental music in the 17th and 18th centuries, moving to the 19th and 20th centuries spring semester. Composers covered include Couperin, Rameau, Gluck, Paganini, Liszt, Chopin, Belioz, Bizet, Debussy, Ravel, Boulez and others. Fall Quarter and Fall and Spring Semesters, levels B2-C1.

Chinese Civilization: An Introduction

This course introduces to students the general Chinese civilization from the Neolithic era down to the present. It emphasizes the late imperial period to the contemporary world. The course covers a wide range of topics, such as history, philosophy, politics, women’s studies, local society, economy, environment, etc. The goal of the course is to provide students with general knowledge of China’s past and present, but at the same time encourage them to deeply investigate one or two fields that mostly attract them.

Additional Modules

Students will enroll in Spanish for Heritage Speakers, and will then take an additional 20 hours of modules including: Spanish Business (10 or 20 hours), Spanish and Latin American Literature (10 hours), Spanish Art History and History (10 hours).

Britain in the Age of Revolution and Reform

Britain in the Age of Revolution and Reform will examine a period of great change in British politics, society and the economy. In an age greatly influenced by the revolutions in America and France, Britain itself underwent its own revolutions— the industrial and agricultural.  The period covered will show how by the end Britain was on its way to becoming the economic powerhouse of the world, with a changing landscape of growing cities, enclosed fields and factories

Britain Today: Issues and Perspectives

This course provides a foundational overview of Great Britain, its people and culture. There are two blocks: the British Present and the British Past. As their names suggest, they deal with contemporary British politics and society and with key formative moments in English history. While there is a formal structure to the course we will not live in isolation from the world outside. There will certainly be events which illustrate or contradict what has been discussed in class: you are encouraged to bring your thoughts on these into class discussions.

Contemporary Mexican History

Este curso examina la historia de México entre 1810 y 2016, desde la Guerra de Independencia hasta el presente, enfocándose en las principales transformaciones políticas, sociales, económicas y culturales.El contenido del curso se divide en seis unidades. La Unidad I presenta una introducción a la historia de México con una breve descripción de la época colonial, la geografía de México, el contexto de Querétaro y las reformas borbónicas como la antesala de la Guerra de la Independencia. La Unidad II se enfoca en la época de Independencia y pos-Independencia en el Siglo IX.

Wine in Italy and the Western World

In the context of the history and culture of Italy, wine is not only a beloved drink but forms an essential part of Italian civilization. From the study of wine students will learn about the practices of earlier cultures, about Italian values and our own. This course will explore various aspects of wine civilization in Italy: mythology, religion, economy, society, history, art, literature, in order to provide students with a unique perspective on wine and Italy today.

Direct Enroll Courses at the University of Oviedo

Students have the option of directly enrolling in one to two courses at the University of Oviedo. Students who select direct enroll courses will take fewer courses at the ELE language institute. Syllabi are available upon request and all courses are taught in Spanish. Direct enroll courses are available in the following departments: Spanish Language and Literature, Classic and Romance Languages, and Modern Languages and Literature, Art History, Geography, History and Philosophy.
