Via Francigena: Trekking Through Italian History

Trek along the Via Francigena (route of the Franks) from the French border to Genoa, along the Ligurian coast of the Cinque Terra, to Lucca and Siena and finally Rome. The present day economic and cultural conditions of towns along the Via Francigena will win our attention as we attempt to understand the communications that defined this route in the pre-modern era of the troubadours, the newsprint world of the industrial era, and the e-world of contemporary times. Students will also enroll in the other regularly offered courses during the Siena fall program as well.

Spanish Culture and Civilization: The 20th Century—Journey to Democracy

This course traces the historical, political, social, and cultural journey of Spain up to the twentieth century. You will familiarize yourself with Spanish idiosyncrasies and the special and original characteristics of this country and its people. You will also get to know the concerns of the Spaniards (terrorism, unemployment and immigration [CIS survey, June 2004]) and understand their causes.

Spanish Culture and Civilization: The Formation of Spain: From the Beginning to the Borbón Dynasty

This course aims to give you a basic idea of Spanish culture and civilization through a study of the main elements of the culture. In this way, you will travel from the Paleolithic age to the eighteenth century. You will witness the most important social and historical events that built the essence of Spain, which are the same cultural characteristics you will experience during this course.

Spanish Literature: Spain in Crisis–From the Disaster of 1898 to Democracy

In this course you will study Spanish literature around 1898. This was a time of crisis in Spanish society from which a group of writers surfaced that made up the Silver Age of Hispanic arts. The period studied is after the Civil War of 1936 with the censor limitations of Franco. Lastly, authors of the restored democracy will be read and studied.In the Spring Semester and Spring Quarter this course is offered in Block B.

Topics in Latin American and Argentine History in Rosario

In Latin American and Argentine History, you will learn to understand present day Argentina by discussing the country’s main political, social, economic and cultural processes. Using different conceptual and textual tools, you will expand your opportunities for understanding the Spanish language. In this sense, the priority will be speaking and reading comprehension. This course requires students to have completed two years of college-level Spanish.

Global Culture

Culture surrounds us. The movies we watch, the clothes we wear, the stories we tell, and the music we listen to all contribute to our individual and collective identities. For much of human history, culture has been shaped by our local environments, but today we live in a time in which commodities, bodies, and information flow easily across borders.

GLBL 388: Contemporary Britain in a Global Setting

This course examines contemporary British politics and society. We will discuss the commanding themes in British politics and public life and look at their historical context. The course provides an introduction to the principal institutions, parties and issues in British politics. This will extend to consideration of key social issues - including race and diversity and aspects of popular culture from broadcasting to sport, from music to the monarchy.
