Survival Spanish

This course is meant for students with little or no experience with the Spanish language. You will learn basic greetings and sayings to help you better navigate the local Segovia community and Spanish culture during the program.

Hispanic Culture through Literature (900-1600)

This class introduces students to a selection of texts written in the various languages of the Iberian Peninsula (Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Castilian, Catalan, Asturian, Portuguese) from 900-1600 in their literary, artistic, and historical contexts. It is a survey course meant to familiarize students with some of the major historical, cultural, and literary currents of the premodern Iberian world. In addition, students will gain proficiency in the critical analysis of primary literary texts, using secondary texts as supporting evidence for historical and cultural context.

History of Iberian Languages

In this course we will study the languages of Iberia in their socio-cultural context. Topics will include the development of the Iberian Romance languages from Latin, Andalusi Arabic in its classical and vernacular forms as well as Aljamiado (Islamic Spanish), Hebrew, and Judeo-Spanish. Emphasis will be on language use across different speech communities, and the relationship between written and spoken communication in their social, cultural, and political contexts.

2nd Year Spanish- Writing

The composition class contributes to the development of written production and interaction. The development of such a skill is based on four axes: content; acquisition and expansion of vocabulary; grammar; and spelling all based on students' previous knowledge. The above is based on the fact that writing is a technique that exercises different functions in everyday life according to the contexts and purposes of the user of the language

Spanish Language - Pronunciation and Phonetics

This course offers the opportunity for students to learn and practice the correct pronunciation of Spanish with the aim of obtaining greater security and confidence in interacting on a daily basis with Spanish-speakers.  More specifically, the course focuses on teaching students basic concepts of phonetics, spelling and intonation of Spanish with the aim for them to be able to identify and reproduce both oral and written versions of all the phonemes of the Spanish language.In the Spring Semester this course is offered in Block B.

Second Year Spanish – Composition

This intensive course is part of a complementary three-class curriculum including Grammar A2 and Conversation A2, which together cover the second year of Spanish (SPAN 201-202-203). In this writing course the students of intermediate level produce different types of texts, such as: descriptive, narrative, argumentative and expository in situations of daily and academic use.

Second Year Spanish – Conversation

This intensive course is part of a three-class complementary curriculum including Writing A2 and Grammar A2, which together cover the second Spanish year (SPAN 201-202-203). In this course students practice intermediate grammar of Spanish with fun oral dynamics so that students develop their production more, have confidence speaking in everyday situations.

Spanish History

This course is offered at the 2nd year Spanish (A2) level. It examines the history of Spain from the Paleolithic to the present, focusing on the main political, social, economic and cultural transformations and the different historical moments that forms the basis of Spain.
