Program Overview

Attend a general information session on February 12th from 12 to 12:50 p.m in 121 McKenzie Hall.

Building on a quarter-century of academic excellence, the London Centre offers multi-disciplinary courses in the liberal arts and humanities with an emphasis on experiential learning supplemented by local outings and excursions. Internship placements are also available to qualified students who are committed to gaining a unique perspective into British life. The internship placement contains both the practical element of working in the organization and a reflective element through the accompanying Internship Seminar. In addition to the internship placement, you will enroll in two to three other GEO courses. If you plan to enroll in an internship placement you will need to be flexible and committed to the internship schedule and responsibilities entailed from both a professional and personal standpoint. Because of the time commitment required, you may sometimes have to forgo a program activity, excursion, or personal weekend away in order to fulfill your responsibilities to the organization. PLEASE NOTE: Visa is required for internship students.

Academic Details

You will enroll in two to four courses in addition to the Internship Seminar and placement. All courses offered in London are recognized and approved for academic credit by various GEO partner institutions. Actual credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. For UO students internship credits are calculated at a ratio of 30 hours to 1 quarter credit. GEO partner university students should check with their home campus study abroad office to confirm how many contact hours are required for internship credits.

In your internship placement, you will work side by side with British nationals, allowing you a unique insight into the professional life of Londoners. You will be expected to dress and conduct yourself appropriately to the standards of the placement organization. In placing students, GEO will try to ensure that you will have a variety of challenging tasks throughout your term; however, you should also expect to help in menial office tasks as well.

London will serve as a classroom as much as the center itself, with visits to London’s exceptional museums, galleries, and the House of Commons. In addition, you will enjoy theater and concert productions often complemented by private talks with directors or prominent actors. Courses are taught by British faculty who have experience teaching US students as well as considerable practical experience in the related field they are teaching—including professional actors, artists and the founder of the European Policy Information Centre. Courses make use of a variety of materials and texts, all of which are included in the program fee.

There will be two day excursions to other cities around the UK (students have previously been to Manchester, Oxford and Bristol) as well as one overnight trip to Edinburgh

Due to the competitive nature of internships, it is recommended to work with a study abroad and/or career center advisor to review your resume and prepare for an interview in advance. Some examples of past placements have included:

Housing Description

Students will be living in shared housing in Central London. Students will be housed in twin rooms in either apartments or studios with shared living spaces. The housing will be conveniently located in either Zone 2 or Zone 3 in London. Students will be within walking distance of the Tube network, local supermarkets, restaurants and cafes.

The housing will be fully furnished and the cooking spaces will be fully equipped with utensils, plates, glasses and cookware. All apartments have Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, linens and 24/7 emergency support.

Your program application will have a housing questionnaire to gather information and assist with roommate assignments. Please note that students may share an apartment with students of a different gender.

Cancellation Policy

IMPORTANT: The GEO Cancellation Policy is effective from the time a student agrees to pay their non-refundable program deposit or electronically signs the program commitment form, regardless of application or acceptance status. It is essential to read this policy before a potential cancellation takes place, to fully understand the withdrawal and cancellation penalties, and to understand what it means financially to commit to a study abroad program.

Students who cancel their participation must notify GEO in writing. Email is acceptable (geoinfo@uoregon.edu). Verbal notification to GEO or notification given to a non-UO campus study abroad office is not sufficient.
